Barking and Dagenham Giving - A civil society revolution? Lessons from Barking and Dagenham’s new social infrastructure partnership model

In this presentation, stakeholders involved in BD Giving will look back at the last 18 months of collaboration and share their experiences of what’s worked.

A collective of social infrastructure organisations in Barking and Dagenham has set in motion an intentional rebuilding of collaboration and partnership towards a more equitable model of resourcing and decision making. B&D has one of the highest levels of socio-economic deprivation in the country.

In the ‘messy’ landscape amplified by years of austerity, the challenge for local VCSE organisations has been to collaborate effectively whilst also trying to survive. The sector, one of the smallest in London had become very disconnected with a growing sense of mistrust. At the same time, the Council was eager to rebuild relationships with the sector, recognising that a strong VCSE was central to enabling local people to create meaningful change for themselves, their family and their neighbourhood.

In this presentation, stakeholders involved in BD Giving will look back at the last 18 months of collaboration and share their experiences of what’s worked, drawing on examples of real collaboration, including: BD Giving’s participatory grant-making model, which has brought together people from across the borough to distribute £130k of covid relief grants, and the announcement of the creation of a new Community Endowment Fund. BD Collective’s approach to developing networks, where strategy & practice are co-designed by partners working together either via themes or geography.
