Power, participation and public funding: lessons from London’s local authorities

Across London, local authorities are experimenting with new ways of putting communities at the heart of decisions about where money is spent is their local area.

From citizen assemblies to participatory grantmaking, these approaches are reshaping how decisions are made — and who gets to make them.

Join us for a panel discussion with colleagues from Newham, Waltham Forest, Westminster, Hackney and Islington Councils, each at different stages of their participation journey. We’ll explore what’s driving this shift, what’s been learned so far, and what it really takes - in terms of mindset, resources and risk - to make participation meaningful.

This session is for anyone curious about the role of public funders in shifting power, and the practicalities of doing that well at a local level.

The Festival is open to all members of London Funders. Unless otherwise specified, we are not able to accept bookings from non-members. If you’re a funder and interested in becoming a London Funders member, please find out more here.
